I remember sewing my first floral skirt back in Lae. I practically hand sew it.
Later in Port Moresby, I was blessed with a beautiful sewing Machine (the one with many stitches) I dont remember using it cos it was quickly sent to the village for heaven knows why.
Last week I started sewing
"Meri blouse" with my brand new Singer Sewing Machine with the help of my lovely friend Donna.
The first one came out with a large neck size. Haha 😄
My second blouse is in progress, which I hope has a perfect neck size. 😄😂
In Detail:
The PNG meri blouse (also called meri kolos or simply kolos in Tok Pisin, where "meri" means woman) is a classic and stunning daily outfit for women in Papua New Guinea. It's widely regarded as the national dress for PNG women — comfortable, modest, feminine, and deeply tied to cultural identity.
Introduced by missionaries in the late 1800s as part of lessons in modesty, it has evolved far beyond that. Today, it's proudly embraced as a symbol of PNG heritage, worn by women of all ages for everyday life, work, church, markets, casual outings, or even styled up for events.
Why it's a stunning daily outfit:
Comfort first: Loose, flowing fit (often knee-length or below), with elasticated round necklines and puffed or elastic sleeves for easy movement — perfect for coastal heat and highlands cold, daily chores, gardening, office work, or running errands.
Versatile styling: Pair it simply with a laplap (sarong/skirt) underneath, or wear it alone as a dress-like top. Modern versions add flair like belts, heels, pockets, frills, or trendy prints to make it chic and fashionable.
Vibrant and expressive: Fabrics feature bold tropical prints, bright colors, Bird of Paradise motifs, floral designs, or national flag-inspired patterns — turning a simple blouse into a beautiful statement of pride and style.
Practical yet elegant: Many women have "everyday" ones for casual wear and special/church ones that are more embellished. It's easy to sew or buy locally, supporting PNG tailors and small businesses.
Women of PNG rock it confidently in modern ways — tucked, belted, accessorized — proving it's not old-fashioned but timeless and adaptable.
Challenges and pride: Cheap Asian imports have threatened local makers, sparking calls for protection of this unique cultural product. Yet it endures as a source of identity, especially amid globalization and secondhand clothing influences.
The meri blouse (meri kolos) is remarkably consistent across Papua New Guinea as a national garment, with the core features — loose fit, round or elastic neck, puffed/elastic sleeves, modest coverage, and vibrant prints — remaining the same nationwide.
However, subtle regional variations exist due to local sewing traditions, cultural preferences, climate influences, available fabrics, and historical missionary impacts in different areas. These aren't rigid "rules" but reflect how women and tailors adapt the style to their province or region.
The meri blouse unites PNG women more than it divides by region. It's a living garment, constantly re-created with pride! 🇵🇬
Today, you'll see meri blouses everywhere — from classic loose versions for daily life to trendy, belted, printed ones that scream modern PNG style. It's no longer just about modesty; it's about creativity, comfort, heritage, pride and empowerment. A Pure PNG🇵🇬 style.
