Starlink Arrives in Papua New Guinea

Bridging the Digital Divide in Remote and Rural Areas.
Starlink is now officially licensed and activating in Papua New Guinea!

PNG’s rugged terrain, islands, and dispersed population make traditional fiber or mobile infrastructure expensive and slow to deploy.

Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites provide high-speed internet (often 100+ Mbps download, low latency) directly to users almost anywhere with a clear sky view — no need for cables or towers in hard-to-reach villages.

This connects remote communities in the Highlands, Momase, Islands, and Southern regions that have long been left behind.

Students and teachers in rural schools can now gain access to online resources, e-learning platforms, digital libraries, and virtual classes.
Reduced dropout rates and better quality education through tools like Khan Academy, Zoom, or government e-education programs.
Teachers can access training and materials more easily now.

Rural health clinics can consult specialists in Port Moresby or overseas in real-time.
Faster sharing of medical records, remote diagnostics, and emergency coordination.
Especially valuable after natural disasters (as seen with recent cyclones highlighting communication gaps.

Economic Growth & Business Opportunities for
Farmers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs in remote areas is made easier now when they access markets, do online banking, e-commerce, and mobile money more reliably.

The Tourism operators (lodges, tours) can market themselves globally and handle bookings smoothly.
Mining, agriculture, and logistics companies benefit from real-time data, GPS, and communication in operational sites.

Increased competition in telecom should lead to better overall service and potentially lower prices long-term.

Disaster Response & Emergency Services
Starlink proved its value in other Pacific nations and during crises — quick deployment when terrestrial networks fail.
Government, NGOs, and communities can maintain coordination during floods, earthquakes, landslides, or cyclones.

Broader Social & National Development Benefits
Supports PNG’s Reset@50 digital transformation goals and universal connectivity push.
Empowers youth with digital skills for future jobs.

Strengthens government service delivery (e.g., online applications, information sharing).
Complements existing networks rather than replacing them.

Services are now activating following NICTA licensing (Network, Gateway, Applications, and Spectrum approvals). Check starlink.com/map

Users will need a Starlink kit (dish/terminal) which may be costly for some, but transformative for institutions, businesses, schools, and those who can afford it.
